After a session with a psychiatrist she'd never seen before, 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen is sent to McLean Hospital, where she spends the next two years on a ward for disturbed teenage girls.

Susanna Kaysen was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kaysen attended high school at the Commonwealth School in Boston and the Cambridge School before being sent to McLean Hospital in 1967 to undergo psychiatric treatment for depression.
