The result determines each person's position in the social hierarchy. A counter-movement of 'voltés' resists through subversive action. Inspired by Deleuze's theory of 'societies of control', Damasio depicts a soft totalitarianism in which citizens consent to their own permanent tracking and evaluation — the most precise literary precursor to social credit systems and AI-mediated conformity.
